Before Ike (No, it's not a Tina Turner biography!)
(Look at the clear blue sky.)
Well, it's Friday morning. All is calm. Some of our neighbors are still boarding up their windows. We don't expect to have any flooding here, but we'll have to deal with some wind. We were told on the news that our area should "shelter in place" and leave the roadways clear for those people who are under mandatory evacuation.
Yesterday we saw the flow of traffic go by our neighborhood as people left the coastal areas. Late in the day, after working outside in the heat to secure the outside of our house, my husband said he felt like a beer. I told him I'd venture out to see what I could scare up. Traffic was back to normal by then.
I went to the nearest convenience store and found it still pretty well stocked. The line was long, and I noticed that just about everybody was buying beer! A woman in front of me had so much that a man behind me offered to help her carry it to the register. Everyone was friendly. She said to me, "well, might as well start drinking now!" Everyone within earshot nodded in agreement.
What can I say? We've done everything we can and we honestly expect to come through this just fine. The beach houses we were looking at to buy are another story! I worry for those people, but the only thing they should lose is "stuff". They should all be out of there and somewhere safe by now.
We expect to lose power, so don't look for a new blog entry right away. I'll check back in as soon as I can.

We are praying for you! Be safe! Your NE buddy!
Caryl, Seems you guys have done all you can. Now its just the wait.....
Be safe and stay well.
Stay safe, Caryl! I will be thinking of you and all the others in the path of the storm.
Looks like you guys are ready, got the windows covered and beer. You know you have to have sustenance as you go through the storm.
When we lived for a while in Florida we had 'hurricane' watch parties.
I'm keeping you in mind, watching the radars.
Take care.
They're saying on the news that there are THOUSANDS of dumbasses who stayed on Galveston Island because they didn't think the storm would be that bad.
I'm going to be fine, but you're going to see a lot of deaths on Galveston Island. It's already flooding there! It's already going over the seawall and the hurricane hasn't even hit yet! People are going to be swept out to sea. My prayers are with them.
You are "praying" for the "dumbasses" and so will I. Lol.
Stay safe... :)
Caryl, I just heard that on the news, after Katrina why would people chance it? It maybe at this point too late for them to leave, what a shame.
The Houston Channel 13 news just said 40% of the residents of Galveston are still there ! And they are on their own after 9 PM tonight. If they need help and call 911 - no one will answer.
Looks like IKE is driving right up I45.
Stay safe Caryl and family !
oh shit, havingfun. it's on your way!
They're thinking that people were afraid to get into a traffic jam like the ones when everyone tried evacuating for Rita. If my city was under a mandatory evacuation, I would be gone!!
Those poor dumb people! God help them.....
Stay safe everyone!
I always knew you were a smart cookie, Caryl!
Hang in there! We'll all be thinking of you.
I hope you're well, caryl! We're all thinking of you and praying for you, your family and all the people in Ike's path.
Caryl, I have been thinking of you and wanted to send my prayers. I have seen some of the devastating pictures on the early news. I hope that your family is safe and out of harms way. Hugs.
It's noon here on Saturday....I hope you are OK caryl, maybe just without power for now. Please get in touch when you can and let us know you made it through Ike in one piece!
SH
Caryl, Just checking in to let you know thinking about you and yours, hope all is well.
Adding my well wishes for your safety! Hoping your house made it through alright.
Caryl, I've been keeping you and yours in my prayers. Stay safe.
Tif
I wonder if she lost power? Hope you and your family are okay Caryl!
Caryl, As others have stated I hope your absence is due to power failure. I have read it may take up to a month to restore everyone's power from Ike. Hang in there, you and your family are in my thoughts.
Peace, JI
Tuesday morning -
Checking on you Caryl.
No power at our house in Conroe, or our business at Rayford/Sawdust.
We have made two runs to College Station for gas for our generators.
Hope all is well for you and your family - and your home !!
Reading through the news reports and likely no power in Sugar Land, spotty at best perhaps. Hope all is well Caryl.
I saw you post - someplace today so know you're okay. (Can't remember where I saw you... anyway.)
Y'all are so nice! Thanks for checking in. We're fine.
Well said.
