Henry's Got A Squirrelfriend

I haven't been online much lately for several reasons, but I plan to work on a new blog entry today or tomorrow. I had to post a quick little sumpthin' about my crazy dog, Henry, though.

A squirrel lives in our yard and Henry is obsessed with him (her? Let's go with "it"). He loves to patrol his property looking for the squirrel and when it makes an appearance, Henry will gleefully chase it up a tree. They both seem to enjoy the game because the squirrel occasionally hops closer to Henry to look down at him, before taking off in the other direction.

It's fine, but an interesting thing has happened. I've noticed Henry has started doing two strange things:

1. He tries to climb one of our smaller trees. He doesn't stop at merely putting his front paws on the trunk, he hops inside the tree where a bunch of branches shoot out and tests them to see if they'll hold his weight. He hasn't gotten any further than that yet.

2. He's started gathering nuts!! C'mon, that's weird for a dachshund. I don't know if he's gathering them so the squirrel can't have them or if he's copying the squirrel's behavior, but pecans have been showing up in my kitchen:

If he goes to live in a hollowed out tree trunk, I'll let you know.

lol! Maybe he was a squirrel in a past life and just now got reminded. lol

Miss Tee Plays the chase game with the squirrels but I haven't seen her start to climb trees or gather nuts just yet.

Nice of you to ask! We're fine. No damage. I'll be writing about it soon.

Caryl, Welcome back glad to hear you didn't have any damage. Animals can be so funny. Seems like Henry has found himself a playmate.

Have a good one.

Henry is adorable. I'm sure you've heard that before but it's true. It's nice he has a new friend but seems it's making him a little squirrely. Our neighbors just got a little long haired doxy and I find myself peeking out the back bedroom window and watching her play. Does this make me a dog peeper? JOJOSIE

He might turn into a tree climber. My friend's dachshund climbed pine trees. He would circle up the tree and then yipe for someone to get him down.

As for the nuts? Well a dachshund will eat ANYTHING.

That has got to be the most curious and smart doggy I've ever read about! LOL! Hey Caryl, please say a prayer for my little Kitty Mina. She dislocated her ankle and has to spend 3 weeks wearing a splint on her leg. I expect her to recover thank God, but it's going to be a long 3 weeks.

Thanks and God bless!

caryl,
I told my girls (dog lovers) about Henry and his squirrel and they are anxious to see your pics after school. Cute!

oh, Lubiana, so sorry to hear about your kitty! That must be a sad little sight, but I'm glad it's not serious.

anonymous: dachshunds can be tree climbers? Oh boy, I didn't know that. They are the weirdest dogs!

SH: that's sweet! Maybe I can get more photos before your girls get home!

Henri (I've decided the French prononciation suits - on-REE - it's my nickname for him) definitely has a mini-doggie sized identity crisis going on. But at least there's good snacks involved!

J'adore Henri...

Caryl - Henry is a cutie !!
Is the "pecan thing" something new?

I showed this to my husband, who had a dachshund years ago. He said The Snooze would fight you for pecans. Hunt them down, crack them, pick the "meat" out and leave the shells for someone to step on.

Look out for Henry's shells !
